The Olympic National Sports Complex is a multi-use facility situated in Kyiv, Ukraine. It is the home of FC Dynamo Kyiv and is regarded as the 16th largest sports venue in Europe. The stadium was re-opened in October 2011 following extensive renovation works carried out in preparation for the 2012 European Football Championship. On October 9, 2011, it was inaugurated with a performance by Shakira

The Kyiv Olympic Stadium was originally constructed in 1923 and is located on the site of the former Red Stadium. When sports became more popular in Russia, the need for a bigger sports stadium was felt. Mikhaylo Grechina was chosen as the designer of the Republic Stadium, which was originally built in 1966, was expanded and modernised from 1968 to 1980.

The stadium was re-opened in October 2011 following extensive renovation works and on October 9, 2011, it was inaugurated with a performance by Shakira. The renovation was carried out in preparation for the 2012 European Football Championship. The renovation project involved the removal of the roof and the various historical elements of the stadium. The upper tier has been enclosed in a translucent roof that’s made up of laminated glass fibre. The lower tier of the stadium was completely rebuilt following the removal of the outer layer and the west stand, which was previously used for VIP seating was also reconstructed.

A Piece Of History Of The Stadium

The Olympic Sports Complex was named after the games held there and was given national status in 1996 when it’s name was changed to “Olympia”. The stadium was renovated from 1997 to 1999, but its capacity was reduced to 83,450. It remained as the home ground of Dynamo Kyiv until 1998 when the club decided to build the new Lobanovsky Dynamo Stadium because they rarely exceeded 10,000 spectators. The Olympic Stadium is also often used for international matches and it was the venue of the 2008 Ukrainian Cup final.

The Stadium in Kyiv is the home ground of Ukraine’s national football team and it’s now regarded as one of the best sports facilities in Eastern Europe. The stadium is easy to get to, and it’s close to the city centre and there are guided tours that take you inside the complex on occasions. Concerts are often held within the stadium too due to it’s massive capacity and location.
