The Ukrainian State Museum Of The Great Patriotic War

Many different wars and battles throughout the rich history of Ukraine left dozens of museums related to the military and its equipment. Nowadays, The Ukrainian State Museum Of The Patriotic War is one of the most visited places of that kind. With massive historical impact, visitors are able to see dozens of weapons that soldiers used in the past. 

If you have ever planned to visit the Pechersk district in Kyiv, this monumental complex mustn’t be forgotten. Founded in 1981 by Leonard Brezhnev, a Soviet leader, this beautiful artistic place was forced to change its residence twice. But today, it is located on the outskirts of this district, fixed on the vivid hills that are positioned right of the Dnipro River. Since 1996, this magnificent museum has carried the title as National one which was declared by the Ukrainian president from that time, Leonid Kuchma. 

The Ukrainian State Museum Of The Great Patriotic War is a place where tourists can see plenty of interesting things. A total of 18 galleries are displayed, as well as airplanes and other military equipment that has been used in various wars in the past. Its biggest attraction that will leave anyone in awe is known as the “Motherland Statue”. It represents not only a treasure of this museum but also one of the most recognized and specific monuments in the whole country. Naturally, something that impresses the most is its size but also socialist realism style which is completely the opposite from the popular golden cupolas of Pecherska Lavra which is situated nearby. A huge woman statue made of titanium that has a height of 62m and weight of 12 tons in the form of shield and sword leaves everyone breathless. However, something you should definitely know is that some rumours about the statue itself can be heard when you come here. There are doubts that it is not totally built correctly and some people are afraid of its collapse. But nothing similar has ever happened with this amazing historical monument.

With over 300 exhibits to display, this museum is one of the most supplied in Ukraine. In the beginning, you can notice many tanks and other equipment and artefacts from the wars. All of them have a video story displayed as well as detailed descriptions about their purpose, use, and importance. For locals, these sights might be emotional so don’t be surprised if anything similar happens during your visit.
