Expo Center of Ukraine (VDNH)

It's just across the road from the metro, in Teremky on the edge of Holosiiv Forest, and it is enormous: nearly 287 hectares, which makes it the fifth largest complex of its kind in the world.

Hire a bike. There are wooden paths running behind the complex specifically for it, and without one you'll see a fraction of the place and spend the day walking between pavilions.

What It's Actually Like Now

Be clear about what you're coming to. Most of the pavilions stand empty, used now and then for temporary exhibitions, and the majority of the grounds have been given over to parkland. If you're expecting a working exhibition centre you'll be disappointed; if you come for a long walk or ride through Soviet architecture in a forest, it's excellent.

The site is built from 180 buildings and structures, about 20 of which have architectural status. The Propylaea, the monumental gateway at the entrance modelled on ancient Greek design, is the one everybody photographs. There are kiosks scattered about, along with four water towers and fountains.

The pavilions to look for are the ones in full Stalinist style, decorated with hammers and sickles and red stars. They're the reason photographers come out here.

Pavilion 9 is the exception to all the emptiness. It reopened in 2025 as KYT, a barrier-free events space run by the Kuraz team, and in September 2026 gained a 4.5 metre cat climbing out of its side wall. The whale hangs in the air a few minutes further on, so the two of them make an easy loop from the main fountain if the pavilions start to blur into one another.

Around 80 exhibits are usually on the fairground, and the events programme is the reason Kyivans come back rather than visiting once. Book fairs and concerts run through the year, and every winter the site turns into the city's winter wonderland, with a Christmas market and skating that pull in crowds nothing else here manages.

Check what's on before you travel, because a quiet weekday and an event weekend are two completely different days out. You can get married here too - VDNH runs ceremonies on site, so don't be surprised to walk past a wedding party posing in front of the Propylaea on a summer Saturday.

Practical Notes

The complex has been running since 1958 and is managed by the State Management of Affairs rather than out of the state budget. It's a member of the Exhibition Federation of Ukraine and the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry.

The Praha Restaurant is less than half a mile away if you want somewhere to end up. Further out on the same line, Feofaniya Park and Pirogovo are both worth a day of their own.
